Checklist 1: Career Transition

E-mail Print PDF

There are steps you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO TAKE if you are looking for a job.

  • Tell your Family

    • Make sure your family knows about your job search.  They are your primary support network and they can and will help - if you let them.
    • Make sure they know what type of work you are seeking - otherwise, they won't be able to help.
    • Whatever you do, don't hide the fact that you are now "in career transition."  Family members can be some of your best networking contacts - especially if they are members of groups, teams, clubs, etc. where they see "people who know people."
  • File for State Unemployment benefits

  • Evaluate your BRAND

      • Make sure you present the right image both in person AND on the Internet.
      • Make sure you have an email address that projects the image of an "Internet savvy" individual
      • If you are still using "aol.com" or "hotmail.com" or any similar service, consider upgrading to "gmail.com" or any of the other more up-to-date services.
    • Do a Self-Assessment to decide what job you should look for next

    • Identify companies that might have jobs you want - Develop a Target List

    • Write a Resume targeted for that job

    • Join LinkedIn.com

      • Post your profile on LinkedIn - and include your Resume on their Box.net application
    • Network, Network, Network

    • Evaluate your Financial situation

    • Make sure you have Health Insurance coverage
