Career Fitness Tip #28: How to Work a Job Fair
by Malcolm O. Munro

Malcolm Munro, the “Career Fitness Coach” is a speaker, consultant and coach .  He is the author of Marketing Yourself for Your Dream Job: How to Get the Job and Career You’ve Always Wanted.

His video series is well worth watching.  This one, in particular, speaks to the topic of working a Job Fair.  We’ve heard that most people hate them.  But, malcolm has a different slant on them and the video will help you work them effectively.

Summary Tips:

  • Be prepared by doing your homework first.
  • Find out which companies will be participating in the Job Fair.
  • Go to their websites and see which positions they have open.
  • From that information, make a list of your target employers and prioritize them as “A” “B” or “C” – with “A” being the highest priority.
  • Develop targeted resumes for each of your “A” and possibly your “B” category employers.
  • Make sure your resume indicates your qualifications for the positions they have open – and which you are targeting.
  • Get to the Job Fair early with your tailored resumes.
  • Walk the room to find out where the companies are.
  • If there is a line at your “A” list companies, get in line.

REMEMBER:

  • Dress for success
  • You are there to do business and treat the company’s representatives appropriately
